Last year, Student Council hosted a mini party for all the kids from Neighbor 2 Neighbor and I was in charge of planning it. The day came around and everyone was excited. I helped set up games, make food, put up decorations, and by the end of the day we all got to know each and every kid. During it, there was one boy, probably 9-10, who stuck out to me. He arrived during the set up and was super interested in helping out. I struck up a deal with him, where I would give him some of my Bojangles in exchange for him helping me set up the tables. As we worked he told me all about his life, how much he had improved at reading and how excited he was to play the games with us all. We even made a secret handshake to use. The moments I got to bond with this kid I didn’t know was special beyond words to me, and I truly saw why we were raising money, and how amazing the people and kids we help are.
This moment, as you could have guessed, has stuck with me throughout all of my Student Council time, not just as a good memory, but as motivation to continue helping my community and doing good for those around me. That kid showed me how amazing people can be, people who I never knew, and how much one person like me can impact another’s day or even life through kindness and charity. He is the reason I strive day in and day out to work for Charity Ball, and the joy we bring to people like him and their communities is what Charity Ball is all about for me.
